The Río Pilatón (in the upper reaches: Río Corazón ) is an approximately 48 km long right tributary of the Río Toachi in northwest Ecuador .

River course

The Río Pilatón has its source as Río Corazón on the western flank of the 4790  m high Corazón volcano in the Cordillera Occidental . The headwaters are in the province of Pichincha at an altitude of about 3900  m . The Río Corazón flows mainly in a north-westerly direction through the mountains. From river kilometer 32, the E20 trunk road , which connects the central high valley of Ecuador with the city of Santo Domingo de los Colorados , follows the course of the river. The river is now called Río Pilatón . At river kilometer 25 the river passes the village of Manuel Cornejo Astorga (Tandapi) . At river kilometer 16, the Río Chictoa flows into the Río Pilatón on the right. This turns to the west and now forms the border with the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (on the northern bank of the river). Finally, the Río Pilatón flows into the Río Toachi at an altitude of about 810  m on the western flank of the Cordillera Occidental near the village of La Unión del Toachi.

Catchment area

The Río Pilatón drains an area of around 560 km². The catchment area extends over a length of 20 km along the ridge of the Cordillera Occidental. It extends from the Atacazo volcano in the north to the Corazón volcano in the south.

Use of hydropower

The Toachi-Pilatón hydropower project is expected to be completed in 2021. The planned commissioning of the Sarapullo power plant is planned for the end of 2019. At a weir ( ) 14.5 km above the mouth of the Río Pilatón, a water volume of up to 40 m³ / s is then fed to the power plant via a tunnel. Below this, the water is directed into the Toachi Dam reservoir .
