Vyacheslav Wassiljewitsch Ossiko ( Russian Вячеслав Васильевич Осико ; born March 28, 1932 in Leningrad ; † November 15, 2019 ) was a Russian solid-state physicist .

Life

Ossiko studied at the Moscow Chemical-Technical D. I. Mendeleev Institute (MChTI) with a degree in 1954.

In 1955, Ossiko became a research assistant at the Moscow Lebedev Institute of Physics (FIAN) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)). He received his doctorate in 1960 as a candidate in chemical sciences . In 1961, at the suggestion of Alexander Michailowitsch Prokhorov and Nikolai Gennadijewitsch Basows, he became head of the laboratory for single crystals , in which crystals and glasses for lasers were searched, prepared and examined. Ossiko received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences in 1968 . In 1974 he was appointed professor . Key activities were selective laser spectroscopy , the radiant and non-radiative relaxation processes and the high temperature - Raman scattering , with which he gained international recognition. High-melting materials were melted by induction melting in a cold crucible . An important result of this work was the production of zirconia crystals, which soon found worldwide distribution. This developed into an industry for high-melting single crystals, glasses and ceramics in the USSR and beyond . In 1981 he was elected Corresponding Member of the AN-SSSR.

In 1983 Ossiko became head of department and scientific deputy director of the Institute for General Physics of the AN-SSSR, which was founded in Moscow in 1982 on the basis of Department A of the Lebedev Institute with Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov as director. In 1987 Ossiko was elected a full member of the AN-SSSR. In 1997 he became director of the Science Center for Laser Materials and Technologies of the Institute for General Physics at RAN and remained so until he resigned as director in 2007 and became head of the center. Ossiko was the author or co-author of a large number of publications. His deer index is 39.
