Berthold Simons

Berthold Simons OSB (born December 30, 1918 in Eschweiler - Dürwiß as Joseph Simons ; † December 17, 1980 in Kornelimünster near Aachen) was a German Roman Catholic religious . From 1967 to 1980 he was the second resident abbot of the rebuilt New Benedictine Abbey of Kornelimünster near Aachen .

Life

Berthold Simons joined the Benedictine order in the Benedictine priory in Ilbenstadt and took his first vows on April 29, 1938. In 1939 he was drafted into military service; In 1946 he returned from heavy captivity. On May 22, 1947 he made his profession and studied philosophy and theology in Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main, at the Benedictine Abbey of Siegburg, at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome and at the University of Salzburg . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1949 . In 1950 he was in Salzburg with the work of Benedict of Aniane as a religious reformer to Dr. theol. PhD. He was initially active in pastoral care, later a teacher in Stolberg.

In 1967 he was elected abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Kornelimünster. The abbot 's benediction was given to him on July 11, 1967 by the Aachen Bishop Johannes Pohlschneider . In 1980 he had to resign due to health problems.

For more than 25 years he was clergyman and lecturer in various committees of the Aachen diocese and the order. Since 1971 he has donated thousands of confirmations. In his place of birth Dürwiß he is the namesake of the Abt-Simons-Straße .

He got involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 1972 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien Cardinal de Fürstenberg and invested in the order on December 9, 1972 in Aachen Cathedral by Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy .
