Bertram Bartl studied painting from 1981 to 1987 at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe under Per Kirkeby . Until the end of the 1980s, more conventional painting with mystical themes (e.g. faun and tree, heart, snake ) emerged.

In the 1990s, Bartl used the computer for image processing. He scanned his drawings and distorted them on the computer. With this he achieved an increase in expression as with Mona Lisa and JFK and MM . The central work of this creative period is his ten-part dance of death cycle , created between 1991 and 2000 . From 2001 there was a U-turn back to pure painting. Bartl describes this phase, which deals almost exclusively with the motif “face” and the primeval female body, as “neo-archaicism”.

In August 2001, his more than six meter high sculpture Paar was installed on the corner of Heilmeyersteige / Berliner Ring in Ulm. The steel figures, painted in blue and red, which symbolize a man and a woman, are part of an art project that was realized after a competition with works by eleven artists in the Eselsberg development area.
