Historical development

On June 17, 1892, the city's commercial advanced training school opened. This conversion was based on the decree of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of March 3, 1890, in which it was u. a. called:

“There is no reason to allow the craft schools to continue in the local way. Rather, they are to be converted into municipal commercial training schools and the royal offices of leadership in boards of trustees. The administration of the schools will be simplified without the cities having to incur major expenditures, since state subsidies of up to two thirds of the maintenance costs including the costs of lighting and cleaning the classrooms are to be granted, while the municipalities only provide the classrooms. maintain and heat, as well as contribute half of the state subsidy in cash, provided that this does not reduce their performance. "

Rector Burmeister was entrusted with the management of the new advanced training school. The lessons were held in 4 classes for knowledge subjects and a drawing class for architectural drawing. The total number of pupils was 144. Six teachers taught, with a school fee of 3 marks only for drawing lessons .

From April 1902 the school was under the direction of Mr. Eckhardt, from 1905 Mr. Schipke followed, then Mr. Kaufmann from 1908. In 1917 the director of the Municipal Augusta School, Mr. Voss, took over the school management. In 1923 the law on compulsory vocational schooling came into force. In Prussia, the term "vocational school" was then introduced.

In 1936 the district vocational school was founded. The local vocational schools in Gelnhausen, Bad Orb , Wächtersbach , Birstein and Somborn were dissolved. The lessons took place in the rooms of the elementary school on the Obermarkt. 658 young people were enrolled in 26 classes. The full-time teachers Wilhelm Schumann (headmaster), Eugen Lotter (headmaster from 1938) and Georg Wagner were remedied by calling in elementary school teachers for civics, German and arithmetic as well as masters for individual areas of professional knowledge. A year later, the teaching staff was expanded to include Fritz Scherf (wood and construction industry), August Devnet (applied arts), and Wilhelm Möller (hairdressing and clothing industry). This is followed by the establishment of specialist classes for bank apprentices for the districts of Büdingen, Schlüchtern and Gelnhausen. With the beginning of the war, teaching had to be severely restricted.

At the end of the war, teaching came to a complete standstill. The district vocational school was closed until further notice. School operations were resumed in January 1946: there was a lack of teachers and furniture. Head was Deputy Director Herber. 1947 saw the opening of the housekeeping department for the completion of compulsory schooling for all female young people without an apprenticeship. Branch offices were set up in Bad Orb, Wächtersbach and Somborn. This was followed by the establishment of the public commercial school and its affiliation as a vocational school and the transfer of the school management to Mr. Georg Wagner.

The agricultural vocational school was attached to the district vocational school in 1949. Branch offices were set up in numerous villages for the initially 165 students. Miss König traveled from village to village on a tractor with a portable kitchen to give block lessons. In October 1950 the foundation stone was laid for the first construction phase at Seegraben. The classrooms were insufficient for the 63 existing classes, so shift work was introduced. The brisk construction activity was continued in October 1953 with the construction of the housekeeping department and the workshops for metal, wood, painting and building trades.

In 1962 a one-year housekeeping school was attached to the school, which provided the trained nurses for the district hospital, and in 1964 the two-year vocational school for nutrition and housekeeping was set up, including a commercial vocational school. Under the headmaster Hans Schellhaase, who was in charge of the house from 1965, the technical college "Economics and Administration" was introduced and the building of the former secondary school was integrated as Building B. In 1975 the "Hohe C" was completed one year later the technical school for social education was introduced .

Under school principal Gerhard Benzing (1981 to 2005) the extension of the V-building and the renovation of buildings A, B and C took place. The technical school for plastics and rubber technology was opened in 1989 and the vocational high school was expanded to include data technology and nutrition, and the higher vocational school for social assistance was opened.

With Gustav Honzen (2006 to 2009), the school achieved record numbers of pupils for the first time: in 2008, 3726 pupils were taught. The successor from 2011 was Günter Rau. Under his leadership, the refrigeration, air conditioning and natural science wing (Building D) was opened and the administration wing revised. Hartmut Bieber has been running the school since 2015.
