history

Forum of the Ostvest vocational college

The Sunday school in Datteln can be rated as a forerunner of the current vocational college. On non-working Sundays, with largely church support and therefore naturally after the service, people willing to learn, especially those from the trades, were given the opportunity to satisfy their thirst for education.

Those apprentices who attended the advanced training school in Datteln, which is recorded in the annals from around 1888 to 1922, also had to sacrifice the weekend. In addition to the operational instruction, help was given in reading, arithmetic and writing, which gradually became more and more job-related. The vocational school developed from this and was first mentioned in a document in 1922.

In 1924 the business school was founded. Thus, a second branch, which is still valid today, was added to part-time school education in the vocational school: full-time school education. Pupils were and will be specifically prepared for professional life in these courses. While the commercial school prepared for the commercial professions, today there are also technical courses in full-time form at the school.

When the vocational training school was added in 1949 to the training of people who had already got to know professional life, the structure was created that can still be found today. Over time, not only have the educational content changed, but occasionally the name as well. While in 1983 the "Vocational Schools Datteln" celebrated their 100th anniversary, from January 1, 1993 it was called "Vocational Schools of the Recklinghausen District in Datteln". The reason for this name change was the takeover of the sponsorship by the Recklinghausen district . After three years as "Kollegschule Ostvest", the name was changed in 1998 to "Berufskolleg Ostvest - secondary school in the Recklinghausen district in Datteln". The "Ostvest" comes from the actual east-west, as the college is in the east of the west of the Vests, but the city of Datteln condensed the name to Ostvest (with V) because it matched the vest.
