history

The Siegburg Vocational School has existed in its current form since 1969. However, its development began in 1854.

In 1854 the "Catholic Journeyman Association" was founded in Siegburg. The aim of the association was to take on the further training of young people who had dropped out of elementary school. The subjects of religion, German, mathematics, drawing and singing were taught; the teachers worked part-time. The training system became more and more important;

In 1875 a general advanced training school was finally opened in Siegburg. Here the lessons included reading, spelling, essay, arithmetic, spatial theory, natural history, natural science, geography, drawing and history. Class time was on Sundays from 4 a.m., Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 p.m.

In 1888 the general advanced training school became a municipal commercial advanced training school. The basis for this was the endeavor of the craftsmen's guild to establish a crafts school in conjunction with the municipal advanced training school. This craft school should be “a technical school for the theoretical training of craftsmen”.

In 1909, at the request of the bakers 'and confectioners' guild, a specialist class was set up for apprentice bakers and confectioners. From 1914 to 1916 the municipal vocational training school was closed due to the war. In 1920, a voluntary advanced training school was attached to the Siegburg commercial advanced training school. The task of this type of school was to impart knowledge in the subjects of mathematics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and drawing that went beyond the scope of the previous advanced training school.

In 1921 a commercial advanced training school was added to the industrial one. From now on, advanced training schools were called “vocational schools” according to Prussian law. In 1923, compulsory vocational schooling was introduced for all young people under the age of 18 who were no longer compulsory. In 1924 the subject of "housekeeping" was added to the curriculum. The Siegburg vocational school now had three departments. In addition, a commercial day course, the so-called two-year day trading course, was set up. This day course formed the cornerstone for the later commercial school.

In the 1930s, during the economic depression, so-called unemployment classes were set up for young people aged 14 to 18. Appropriate courses have also been set up in conjunction with the employment office for unemployed young people between the ages of 18 and 21. In 1935, the two-year day trading course was officially recognized as a two-year trading school. In 1937 a housekeeping school was opened to expand and deepen the existing housekeeping education. In 1938 the first district subject classes were set up for bank apprentices, in 1941 for young postal workers and in 1943 for young railway workers. From 1944 to 1945 classes were suspended because of the war. On November 15, 1945, classes began in the commercial and housekeeping school and on December 4, 1945 in the vocational school. With the increase in the number of pupils, it became necessary in 1946 to set up a high school graduate course with the curriculum of a commercial college. In 1949 a horticultural department was attached to the vocational school.

In 1963 the construction of the new vocational school building began, in order to finally be able to cope with the increasing number of pupils, but also to achieve a spatial consolidation of the classes. In 1997, the upper level course was brought back to life so that students can also take the Abitur at the vocational college. In 1999, with a change in the School Administration Act, the name of the vocational school was changed to "Vocational College of the Rhein-Sieg District in Siegburg". In 2000, the branch of the vocational college in Eitorf moved into its new premises on Schoellerstrasse in Eitorf. In 2003, due to the ever increasing number of pupils, a third branch was built in Neunkirchen in the building of the old primary school.

A total of 2,700 students are currently attending the Siegburg vocational college and its branches in Bad Honnef , Eitorf and Neunkirchen , where they are taught by around 130 teachers.
