The igus GmbH is a manufacturer of plastic sliding bearings and energy chains made of solid plastic and flexible special cables. Most of the products are injection molded . Igus has also been manufacturing cables for use in energy chains since 1991 .

history

The company was founded on October 15, 1964 by Günter and Margret Blase in Cologne-Mülheim . For the first 20 years, Igus worked as a supplier for technical plastic parts. In 1983 we started our own production of energy chain systems and slide bearings, as well as setting up our own sales department. From 1985 to 2019 Igus grew from 40 to approx. 4150 employees, who are now spread across 35 branches worldwide.

The main factory in Cologne was designed by Nicholas Grimshaw . The company offers students, teachers or professors in technical courses project support with Young Engineers Support (YES).

Igus is the world's largest manufacturer of energy chain systems with special cables, plugs and accessories. This includes cables, harnessed energy supply systems, semi-finished products , multi-axis joints for robots as well as sliding , joint, linear and ball bearings .

Hidden champion

Igus was first named as a Hidden Champion in 2012 .

Competitions

Since 2003, a joint initiative of the Institute for Composite Materials from Kaiserslautern, the Technical University of Cologne , the magazine Industrieanzeiger and Igus GmbH has carried out the manus competition every two years , in 2011 for the first time worldwide. manus recognizes applications with plastic plain bearings .

In 2008 the vector award was added, which also alternates with manus every two years. The vector award honors applications for solutions to questions of energy supply. Partners are the magazine MM MaschinenMarkt , TÜV Rheinland , the machine tool laboratory WZL of RWTH Aachen University and the ZVEI .
