Stefan Bernhard Eck (born January 8, 1956 in Homburg ) is a German politician ( ÖDP , previously animal protection party ). From September 2007 until his party outlet end of 2014 he was national chairman of the Animal Protection Party, for which he in the 2014 European elections to the European Parliament moved in the only successful candidate of the party, where a member of the GUE / NGL Group was. In 2019 he no longer competed.

Life

Eck spent large parts of his life in France and Southeast Asia . After attending elementary school and high school, he studied industrial engineering at a technical college . He then completed vocational training as an advertising clerk , which included specialization in the field of film and photo advertising . From 1978 to mid-1993 he was self-employed with a focus on import and export. From 1990 to 1993 he worked in the arts. He has been married since 1981, a vegetarian since 1998 and a vegan since the end of 2001 . Eck lives in Saarbrücken .

Commitment to animal rights

In 1999 and 2000 Eck was head of the animal rights working group of the Federal Association of People for Animal Rights - Federal Association of Anti-Animal Experiments . From 2001 to 2006 he was head of the animal rights and ethics working group (AKTE) . In 2010, AKTE was finally converted into a working group of the Animal Welfare Party. In 2006 he also became spokesman for the Alliance for Animal Rights , which is an alliance of various animal welfare organizations. In the same year he caused a stir, because he demonstrated in front of the Dachau concentration camp memorial with a sign that belittled the Shoah, "For animals is Dachau every day " .

Political commitment

Animal welfare party

In 2006, Eck joined the animal protection party and co-founded the Saarland state association, of which he became chairman. At the federal party conference on September 29, 2007, he was elected to succeed Jürgen Gerlach as federal chairman of the party. The latter had already announced when he was re-elected in 2005 that he would not be available for another term. In the 2009 European elections he was the top candidate of his party, which received 1.1% of all votes. From the 31st federal party conference on January 12, 2013, due to an amendment to the statutes, he became one of three federal chairmen with equal rights; since then he has shared this position with Horst Wester and Barbara Nauheimer . He also remained the Saarland state chairman until November 2013, and has been deputy there ever since.

In the 2014 European elections , he was again the top candidate of his party. For her, he entered the European Parliament as the only successful candidate . This was made possible by the legally contested elimination of any threshold clauses for European elections . There he joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left ; previously the Group of the Greens / European Free Alliance had also offered him membership.

On December 31, 2014, Eck announced his resignation from the animal welfare party. As a justification, he gave as a public statement on his Facebook page: “There is a not inconsiderable number of members in the federal executive committee who neither have the insight nor the will to disagree with right-wing populist or even people in their political environment To consistently distance right-wing extremists and to reject any cooperation with them. Due to my deepest conviction and as a staunch member of the GUE / NGL group, I cannot belong to any party that would tolerate this. "

The co-chairwoman Barbara Nauheimer and eight other federal board members also resigned from their posts and left the party. At the same time, Eck announced that he wanted to keep his mandate in the European Parliament .

The remaining federal board of the party announced that since his entry into the European Parliament there had been an alienation between him and his party supporters on the one hand and the other board members on the other. In addition, the Confederal Group of the European United Left , of which Eck is a member, had a significant influence on the intra-party conflict. In addition, the simultaneous exercise of his mandate with the office of federal chairman was problematic. This has led to the fact that the party is out of focus of his work. In addition, Eck had already threatened consequences at the 33rd federal party conference, which took place on November 8, 2014 in Kassel . The background was that the party refused to support a Peter Singer Animal Rights Prize "because some ethical positions of Singer contradict our basic program" by accepting an initiative motion . Many party members would have held back with criticism in order to maintain a cohesive appearance in public. Eck and his former party denied all mutual allegations. According to the party, the separation is a good solution for both sides and in the interests of common goals.

Eck, the prize donor Walther Neussel and their like-minded colleagues left the animal protection party and then found an organization in the Giordano Bruno Foundation for the award of the Peter Singer Prize that has now been created. It was awarded for the first time on May 26, 2015 amid protests in Berlin's Urania . In a press release on May 18, 2015, the Animal Welfare Party distanced itself from Peter Singer's anti-disability positions and the award ceremony. Your press release ends with the sentence "We will take part in the counter-demonstration for the award ceremony, which will take place at the Urania in Berlin on May 26th, 2015 from 5 p.m. at the Urania in Berlin, and we call for active participation!" Since then, Eck and Neussel have been the main actors at the Peter Singer Awards ceremony in Berlin every year.

The following passage from the press release is against Eck's statements for leaving the animal welfare party on his Facebook page: The overwhelming majority of the plenum spoke out against the Peter Singer Prize, the content of which would have run counter to our basic program! The consequence was the resignation of MEP Stefan Bernhard Eck and like-minded people from the party a month later. The laudator Dr. W. Neussel, the initiator of the award, announced his departure.

Work in the European Parliament

In the European Parliament he was Vice President of the Intergroup on Animal Welfare and Conservation and a full member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety . He was also an alternate member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and the delegations for relations with the People's Republic of China, the countries of South Asia, the countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as well for relations with the Korean Peninsula. He is also a founding member of the inter-parliamentary interest group “MEPs for Wildlife”.

In addition to animal and human rights, its main activities also included environmental protection.

He did not run for the 2019 European elections , so that he resigned from parliament at the constituent session of the following legislative period.

ÖDP

In January 2020 Eck joined the Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP) , with whose EU MEP Klaus Buchner he had already cooperated.
