Best Boy is an American documentary released in 1979.

The married couple Max and Pearl Wohl live in Queens with their son Philly. Philly is a happy and pleasant person with an intellectual disability. 52-year-old Philly is lovingly cared for by his parents. But the care of the aging couple becomes more difficult over time, especially since Max becomes frail. The couple must start looking for a care facility for their son. Philly is being prepared to live independently of his parents now.

In 1980 the film was awarded an Oscar in the category Best Documentary . Other awards included the New York Film Critics Circle Award , the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award and the Toronto International Film Festival's Audience Award . The film also received a nomination for the Flaherty Documentary Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts .

The film premiered on September 7, 1979 at the Toronto International Film Festival. The US premiere took place in October at the Chicago International Film Festival .

Ira Wohl is Philly Wohl's cousin. With his help, Philly, whose father died during the three years of production, was placed in a nursing home. In 1997, Ira Wohl shot a sequel with the film Best Man and documented the rest of his cousin's life in the nursing home.
