Bestmann (seafaring)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bestmann is an older term in small coastal shipping or fishing for a member of the deck crew who takes on sea guards instead of a helmsman on sea voyages , but without having such a patent . Ships on the small coastal voyage often had no other nautical patent holder on board besides the captain . For this reason, an experienced sailor, who had acquired the necessary knowledge of navigating the ship through the practical instructions on board, took over the sea watch in alternation with the captain.

The payment of the best man was equal to that of a helmsman. Originally the best man was called a fisherman's servant in the fishery , this name changed in the 1920s. Another name is Fietz .
