β Carinae (Beta Carinae) is the second brightest star (1.7 mag) in the constellation Kiel des Schiff in the southern star sky. The star is a sub-giant of the spectral class A2, which is around 110 light years away.
The star bears the historical proper name Miaplacidus . The name origin of the first syllable is possibly in the plural of the Arabic Mâ (water). However, it may also refer to navigation on the water. “Miaplacidus” (Arabic / Latin) could literally mean “calm waters”. Other spelling: Maiaplacidus.
