The Bethlehem Church in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel was one of the Ev. Luth. Parish Eimsbüttel been listening church building . It was built between 1958 and 1959 by the Hamburg architect Joachim Matthaei .

Construction and use as a church

Soon after its completion, the building was considered to be one of the few outstanding Hamburg sacred buildings of the post-war period. As building materials, clinker facades and molded concrete blocks were used on a reinforced concrete frame for the ribbon windows running directly under the roof. The design is carried out sparingly and gives the building a decidedly introverted impression. The slender tower separated from the nave and the low extension used as a baptistery are typical of the time.

Inside, the walls were folded for acoustic reasons and are also made of brick. Nanette Lehmann designed the ornamentation on the walls and tried to symbolize the family tree of Jesus. The altar cross and the bronze entrance door are designs by Fritz Fleer . The door in particular shows a variety of scenes from the story of the birth of Jesus with reference to Bethlehem . Theo Ortner designed the windows .

The church had more than 400 seats, had a Walcker organ and the tower was equipped with four bronze bells from the Rincker bell foundry .

Background of the desedication of the church

Low visitor numbers and the resulting unexplained financing Hamburg Lutheran agreed bishop Maria Jepsen in 2005 the declassification of the Church, which has not been used for some time, as the four churches based in Eimsbüttel St. Stephen , Christ Church , Church of the Apostles and Bethlehem -Kirche were combined into a new large parish Eimsbüttel.

A planned demolition did not materialize because there is a monument protection .

Use after de-dedication

Since October 11, 2010, the building has been used by the Alardusstrasse kindergarten, which was previously operated on the church premises .
