Life

Gertrud Schiller was born on January 7, 1905 in Beerbach as the daughter of the pastor and later dean Wilhelm Heinrich Schiller and his wife Elise Anna Margaretha Schiller, born. Bucket, born. She grew up in Beerbach and Augsburg .

From 1915 she attended the Stetten Institute for girls' higher education . As a woman, she was not allowed to take a high school diploma or attend a humanistic grammar school. She experienced the First World War through the death news of her cousins ​​and uncles. In 1927, Gertrud Schiller decided to take up the new profession of social pedagogue and therefore went to Frankfurt am Main . For her thesis she chose the topic “Adult Education and Elementary Schools”. While training as a social pedagogue, she did a six-month internship at the welfare office in Marburg , which was also responsible for the youth authority in Hamburg. After completing her training, she got a job at the Protestant regional church in Hamburg and moved there in 1928.

Two years later she became a civil servant. In 1930 she took over the management of the Clemens Schulz home in Kuddewörde . After the seizure of power of Adolf Hitler , the churches had to take religious instruction itself; For this task, Gertrud Schiller took an exegetical course in 1934 at the Johannesstift in Spandau . At the time, she dealt with medieval art in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum .

In 1938 she brought out three portfolios with the title “Pictures of the Bible” (“Easter”, “Christmas”, “Encounters with Christ”), initially at Atlantis Verlag, the second edition of which was published in the Johannes Stauda- Verlag ( Kassel ) published.

In 1941 “The Passion of Christ” and “The Creation” also appeared there. In response to Wilhelm Stählin's review , the Freiburg Caritas Association asked Gertrud Schiller to set up an iconographic library. In Freiburg she got in touch with Reinhold Schneider , whose poems were typed on the typewriter and passed from hand to hand. After six months in Freiburg, she initially returned to Hamburg. In May 1944 she met Axel Werner Kühl for the last time .

When the air raids on Hamburg became more frequent and violent, several schools were evacuated to Bavaria. Gertrud Schiller gave religious instruction in Franconian Switzerland , but lived in Bamberg . At the end of the war she wrote “The light shines in the darkness”, which was published in 1946 by the Johannes Stauda publishing house. She made the proposal to set up an office for artistic advice for the communities.

From 1946 to 1969 she was head of the church art service, an office of the Hamburg regional church . At this time she began to work for young theologians and artists at the Church University of Hamburg . In 1979 she received an honorary doctorate from the Church University of Berlin.

In 1993 she finished her standard work on Christian iconography . A year later she died and was buried in Augsburg.
