history

As early as the 1870s, the first plans for a railway line across the Palatinate Gäu were in progress. A route through the communities of Freisbach and Weingarten was not fixed from the start. It was not until 1899 that Neustadt and Speyer were decided as starting and ending points, as well as a route over Freisbach and Weingarten. The line itself should have a gauge in meter gauge . The Kaltenbach or Bruchbach, which forms the boundary between the two communities, had to be crossed. This took the form of a concrete bridge that was completed in 1905. The construction was done on account of the Palatinate Ludwig Railway Company . On August 26, 1905, the bridge was opened to traffic with the opening of the Speyer – Geinsheim section. The line was closed at the end of 1956 and dismantled the following year. However, the bridge was preserved and is now a listed building.
