The concrete vessel of Redentin is a concrete vessel of the "soul Ichter Viking Motor". It was one of a series of more than 50 motorized cargo ships built at various construction sites during the Second World War for the “ Speer Transport Fleet ”.

history

Since steel became scarce during the Second World War, the idea of building ships from lightweight concrete was taken up again. The inventor of this shipbuilding method was Ulrich Finsterwalder .

The hull of the ship was constructed in a shell construction in a construction pit. The production took place with the keel up, and after completion the hull was turned and erected after the pit flooded. Redentin's concrete ship was built in Ostswine between 1943 and 1944 and was to be fitted out in Wismar. It was stranded during the transfer in the Wismar Bay in front of the former fishing village of Redentin, now part of the city of Wismar (Wismar North district), near its current location. After that it was probably never used as a ship, but only as a warehouse. When trying to tow the ship into the port of Redentin in the 1960s, it ran at its current location ( 53 ° 55 ′ 51.5 ″  N , 11 ° 28 ′ 23.6 ″  E, coordinates: 53 ° 55 ′ 51.5 ″  N , 11 ° 28 ′ 23.6 ″  E ) on a sandbar.

A similar ship, the concrete ship Capella , can be viewed in Rostock as a museum ship .
