Betsy Price (* 21st October 1949 in Fort Worth , Texas , as Barbara Elizabeth Cornelius ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . She has been the mayor of her hometown of Fort Worth, the fifth largest city in Texas, since 2011.

Life

Betsy Price was born and raised the last of four children to Wayne Clarence Cornelius and his wife Elizabeth Mary Dalton in Fort Worth , Tarrant County , Texas. She was a student at Arlington Heights High School and was president of Future Homemakers of America , a youth organization that promotes education in family and consumer sciences. Price was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution . In 1968 Betsy Price graduated from high school and then studied biology at the University of Texas at Arlington . From the 1980s, Betsy Price headed her father's used car dealership. She was also active in the International Red Cross Movement .

Betsy Price has been involved in the Republican Party since the 1990s and took up her first political office in 2000 after serving as a tax auditor in Tarrant County . In 2011 she stood in Fort Worth for the mayoral election, which she won in a runoff against her challenger Jim Lane. Price thus succeeded Mike Moncrief and is the second woman to serve as mayor of Fort Worth after Kay Granger . In the 2013 and 2015 elections, Betsy Price was re-elected with no opposing candidates. In 2017 she prevailed with 70 percent of the vote against the Democratic candidate, Chris Nettles. Since her re-election in May 2019, Price has been the longest-ruling mayor of Fort Worth for five consecutive terms.

Betsy Price is married to Insurance Chairman Tom Price and has two sons and a daughter.
