betterplace.org is a donation platform from Berlin, which was founded in 2007 and is operated by the non-profit corporation gut.org .

On the one hand, the platform can be used by non-profit aid projects to collect donations. At the same time, interested donors can find and support both international and small local aid projects here. The goal is to bring people and companies that want to help directly together with the people and organizations that need help. To this end, tools are being developed that are made available so that even small non-profit projects can carry out online fundraising .

From 2007 to 2017, more than 66 million euros were donated to more than 27,000 social projects, including 13.4 million in 2017. 217,000 donors support social projects from 183 different countries (as of 2016). For example, after the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 or after Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, 750,000 euros each were collected, which were passed on to the projects.

Foundation and corporate structure

The betterplace.org platform was founded in November 2007 in Berlin, among others by Joana Breidenbach . In 2010 the company was transformed into the non-profit corporation gut.org . Peter Eigen sits on the advisory board alongside others .

The donation platform betterplace.me , for individuals and non-profit initiatives, the betterplace lab , which researches digital trends in the social sector, and betterplace Solutions GmbH , the companies on their corporate social responsibility , also operate under the umbrella of gut.org advises.

functionality

The target group of betterplace.org are younger and internet savvy people. The average age of the donors is 38 years. The platform acts as an intermediary between supporters and organizations. It is characteristic that the donations do not flow into general global budgets, but are used for specific purposes. Each organization must indicate how much money it collects for what (e.g. 50 euros for 50 rescue blankets or 30 euros for the lunch of 20 children in need).

Large organizations that are represented on betterplace.org include, for example, UNICEF , the German Life-Saving Society , the German Red Cross and the German Children's Fund .

Financing model

The operation of the platform is financed with services for companies, strategic partners and private individual donors. In 2009 Bernd Kundrun donated one million euros to the sponsor. In addition, betterplace.org develops and sells digital products that companies can use to get involved socially. This income is distributed to the parent company and used for the realization of charitable purposes. A small part of the income comes from the voluntary co-donation, which every donor can donate to betterplace.org , and up to 2.5% of every donation remains with betterplace.org , mainly to cover transaction costs. Donations that are not requested for payment within 12 months automatically go to betterplace.org .

The non-profit AG gut.org , which operates betterplace.org , is a member of the Transparent Civil Society Initiative , the Federal Network for Citizenship and the Social Entrepreneurship Network Germany .

criticism

The managing director of the German Central Institute for Social Issues (DZI), Burkhard Wilke, complains that the subjective exchange of experiences is not enough to review the projects. With regard to the Web of Trust, he also criticizes that the sum of the donor opinions could not be smarter than existing seals of approval. The DZI issues its own donation seal . Wilke also sees the new approach positively because it encourages younger people to donate. The detailed presentation of the needs, which on the one hand leads to more trust, also entails increased administrative effort.

Awards

  • betterplace.org is one of seven locations selected in April 2009 in the “Society” category for the Germany - Land of Ideas campaign
  • Lead Awards 2011 silver in the online category "Web special of the year"
