Stephan Breidenbach

Stephan Breidenbach (born June 17, 1955 in Düsseldorf ) is a German legal scholar and mediator. He is professor of civil law, civil procedural law and international commercial law at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and professor of mediation at the University of Vienna . He was dean of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance Berlin.

Life

Stephan Breidenbach studied law and philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1975 to 1980 after completing a bank apprenticeship . In 1989/90 he was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkley. In 1988 he was awarded a doctorate at the LMU Munich with his thesis “The requirements for information requirements when concluding a contract”. jur. doctorate and awarded the Faculty Prize. After his habilitation in 1994 at the LMU Munich with the thesis "Mediation: Structure, chances and risks of mediation in conflict", he was professor for civil law at the University of Leipzig in 2004 . Since 2005 he has held the chair for civil law, civil procedural law and international business law at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt / Oder. He was co-founder and dean of the now insolvent Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance in Berlin.

His main research interests lie in the area of mediation , the development of learning, knowledge and decision support tools (including knowledgetools), legislative theory , the subject of "learning society" and the subject of social innovation .

As an EU advisor to the governments in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, he was a. a. responsible for the harmonization of the Czech banking, insurance and capital markets.

From 1996 to 2004 he was visiting professor / lecturer at the universities of Vienna, Klagenfurt, Beijing and St. Gallen. In 2002 Stephan Breidenbach was awarded the Socrates Prize for Mediation by the Central for Mediation. In 2011 he was part of the Federal Ministry of Justice team and received the German Society for Legislation's Prize for Good Legislation.

Stephan Breidenbach has been honorary professor for mediation, particularly business mediation, at the University of Vienna since 2003. Stephan Breidenbach is an arbitrator at the CAS (Court of Arbitration of Sports). He is co-founder of betterplace.org . In the dialogue on Germany's future with Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2011/12, Stephan Breidenbach was coordinator of the topic “How do we want to learn?” And headed the “Learning Society” working group. Together with Gerald Hüther and Margret Rasfeld, he is the initiator of the Initiative Schule im Aufbruch .

Stephan Breidenbach is married to the anthropologist, author and internet entrepreneur Joana Breidenbach and has two children.
