Betty Nuthall
Betty May Nuthall Shoemaker (born May 23, 1911 in Surbiton , England , † November 8, 1983 in New York , United States ) was an English tennis player .
She was the first non-American woman to win the American championships. If she was defeated by Helen Wills at the age of 16 in 1927 , she won the title in 1930. In 1931 she won the French championships against Hilde Krahwinkel in the semifinals, but then lost in the final to Cilly Aussem .
