The Beuditz School during the First World War

The Beuditz School is a listed school building in the town of Weißenfels in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments it is listed as a monument under registration number 094 80043 .

History and architecture

The school building with the address Beuditzstraße 39-41 was built in 1883 in the Beuditz-Vorstadt, which was incorporated around 1900, as the existing schools were no longer sufficient with the expansion of the city towards the west and the enormous increase in population associated with it in the last third of the 19th century. In 1882 the city council approved the building of the school; The new building was completed in the fall of 1883 and on January 3, 1884 it was handed over as the second city school in Weißenfels.

The clinker brick building is a typical school building in the style of historicism . The distinctive, block-like three-storey building with a basement floor consists of a central building that is framed by side wings protruding over the escape, which creates an effective structure.

During the construction of the building, the theory of the gymnastics father Jahn , that in addition to food, clothing, shelter and attention, people also need physical training in order to have an alert mind and to be of service to society , was taken into account, and the building of a gymnasium was included in the building planned.

During the two world wars, classes had to be reduced and at times completely stopped. During the First World War , the school served as a barracks for a hunter battalion .

A central heating system was only installed in the building between the world wars; In some classrooms, however, the wood-burning stoves remained and were also heated in very harsh winters.

During the Second World War , the school cellars were used as an air raid shelter and makeshift hospitals were set up in the classrooms . The gym was used as emergency shelters for homeless people and families whose homes had already been destroyed by the bombing . The school was occupied by American troops from mid-April to mid-May 1945. In the extension of the gym, there was initially a Red Cross post with the task of reuniting families.

The regular resumption of school operations began on October 1, 1945. In 1982/1983, the first renovation and renovation work was carried out. As part of the school's 100th anniversary in 1984, it was renamed the Georgi-Dimitroff School; since 1991 it has had its old name again. Further renovation measures took place in 1992/1993.

Since September 2006 the school has been an all-day secondary school . From February 2011 until after the 2013 summer vacation, school operations were relocated to the former West High School due to construction work. Another extension was created in the course of the renovation. The gym was completely renovated during the 2019/2020 school year. There are currently (November 2019) 16 classes (with PL ) in six grades (without PL) in the building.
