Rashtriya Lok Dal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rashtriya Lok Dal ( Hindi राष्ट्रीय लोक दल , "National People's Party", RLD ) is an Indian regional party in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

Programmatic orientation and party history

The Rashtriya Lok Dal is the successor of the former Bharatiya Lok Dal (BLD), a party of the middle landowning peasants and the backward castes ( "remaining box ") of northern India, led by former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Indian Prime Minister Charan Singh in 1975 Founded. In 1977 the BLD was absorbed into the Janata Party , was re-established as Lok Dal in 1979 after its disintegration and then merged with other parties to form the Janata Dal in 1989 . The RLD invokes the legacy of Charan Singh. Singh's son Ajit Singh founded the Bharatiya Kisan Kamgar Party (BKKP) in September 1996 . This merged in 1998 together with parts of the remaining Lok Dal to form Rashtriya Lok Dal. Since then, Ajit Singh has been the party leader of the RLD. The party is very much tailored to his person and is directed by him. The RLD advocates the creation of a new state, Harit Pradesh, from the western parts of Uttar Pradesh, where the party has its main focus. Above all, she sees herself as a representative of the interests of small farmers in Uttar Pradesh. The main political opponents in regional elections in Uttar Pradesh are the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party .

In the all-India parliamentary elections in 2004 , the RLD formed an electoral alliance with the Samajwadi Party and won three parliamentary seats in Uttar Pradesh. In the Indian parliamentary elections in 2009 , Rashtriya Lok Dal formed an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and won five of the 80 constituencies of Uttar Pradesh. In November 2011, however, RLD left the NDA and joined the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by the Indian Congress Party . As a result, the RLD party leader Ajit Singh became Minister for Civil Aviation in the Manmohan Singh II cabinet . The RLD also competed in the Indian parliamentary elections in 2014 as part of the UPA, but was unable to win a single constituency.

On March 10, 2014, the former leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) Amar Singh , who had been expelled from the SP in 2012 because of anti-party activities, joined the RJD.
