Bharatpur ( Hindi : भरतपुर , Bharatpur ) was one of the princely states of the Rajputs in today's Rajasthan ( British India ), named after the capital of the same name .

history

Jat Baija, feudal owner of the village Sansani succeeded in the late 17th century by the decline of the power of the Great Mughals triggered turmoil to increase its territory and to become largely independent. His descendant, Thakur Badan Sing (1722–55), built the fortresses Deeg and Bharatpur and called himself Raja of Bharatpur from 1752 . Raja Suraj Mal (1756–63) fought partly with, partly against the Marathas and accepted the title of Maharaja .

From 1828 to 1947 Bharatpur was a British protectorate. In 1941 the princely state had an area of ​​5123 km² and 560,000 inhabitants. He joined the Matsayas Union on March 17, 1948 . He joined India on April 7, 1949 and was incorporated into the state of Rajasthan on May 15, 1949 . On November 1, 1956, the princely state was dissolved.

The former hunting ground of the Maharaja was today's Keoladeo National Park .
