Bhaskar Kumar Ghosh (born February 10, 1936 in Calcutta , India, † August 3, 2008 in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania) , USA) was an Indian-American mathematician who mainly dealt with mathematical statistics .

Live and act

From 1951 to 1955 Ghosh studied at the Presidency College of the University of Calcutta , the last two years in the Statistics Honors BSc Program. There he obtained his first degree ( Bachelor of Science, BSc) in statistics. From 1955 to 1959 he continued his studies in statistics in the PhD program at University College London . There he received his PhD with the dissertation "Sequential Analysis of Components of Variance in Hierarchical Classifications" supervised by Norman Lloyd Johnson. He then worked as a Research Assistant at University College London, as a statistician at the Atomic Power Consortium London, and in 1960/61 as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Chelsea College London. During this time he published the monograph "An Introduction to Sequential Experimentation" with Harold Adolph Freeman, which was published as a US Army Technical Report.

In 1961, Ghosh accepted an appointment at Lehigh University in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania) . There he worked until his retirement in 2005, initially as an assistant and associate professor, and from 1968 as a full professor of mathematics. Although Ghosh also published numerous interesting works on distribution theory, density estimation, etc., he was best known for his contributions to sequential analysis, in particular his monograph "Sequential Tests of Statistical Hypotheses", published in 1970. Together with Pranab Kumar Sen ( University of North Carolina , (Chapel Hill)) he founded the journal "Sequential Analysis" in 1982 and was editor until 1995. Also together with PK Sen, he published the "Handbook of Sequential Analysis" in 1991, the aim of which was to present the most important developments in this theory (up to 1990).

In 1968 Ghosh was Visiting Associate Professor at MIT , 1978/1980 Visiting Professor of Statistics at Virginia Tech . In 1986 the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awarded him the Humboldt Prize (Senior US Scientist Award), during which he was visiting professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in 1986/87 and 1992 . Ghosh was a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the Royal Statistical Society (Great Britain).
