Bienal do Mercosul

The Bienal do Mercosul ( Spanish Bienal del Mercosur , Bienal de Artes Visuales del Mercosur , German Biennale des Mercosur ) is an international art exhibition for contemporary art that has been taking place every two years since 1997 in Porto Alegre , Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil .

Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Chile , Paraguay , Uruguay and Venezuela were the first Latin American countries to take part in the biennial . From 2003 guests from other countries were invited. One million visitors have already been registered this year. Along with the São Paulo Biennale, it is the second largest art biennial in South America.

The event takes place i. A. takes place over two to two and a half months in late autumn and winter. Entry is free. It is run by the Fundação Bienal do Mercosul foundation , which is supported by the government of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and other organizations. Particular emphasis is placed on conveying art to children and young people, for whom special programs are developed.

The main exhibition venues are the Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul Ado Malagoli (MARGS), the Memorial do Rio Grande do Sul , the Santander Cultural and the Usina do Gasômetro, with a total of 20,000 to 24,500 m² of exhibition space available.

Since the 1st Biennale in 1997, sculptures have been exhibited in the Jardim das Esculturas Porto Alegre sculpture park as permanent art in public spaces.

The 11th Biennale, scheduled for 2017, was postponed to early summer 2018 due to the poor economic situation in Brazil.
