life and work

Dittborn studied from 1962 to 1965 at the Faculty of Painting at the Universidad de Chile . In 1966 he moved to Madrid and studied lithography . From 1967 to 1969 Dittborn studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and took courses at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . Back in Chile, Dittborn had contact with the Escena de Avanzada , the artists Gonzalo Díaz Cuevas, Juan Domingo Dávila and Arturo Duclos and the art critic Nelly Richard .

In the 1980s, Dittborn began to paint on large brown paper and sent these paintings, folded to one sixteenth of their original size, in envelopes by post. Later he also painted on fabric, made collages from light materials and made the envelopes himself. This approach enabled him during the reign of Augusto Pinochet (1973–1990) to participate in international exhibitions. The "Airmail Paintings" became the heart of Dittborn's work.

Eugenio Dittborn exhibits internationally. Among other things, he was a participant in documenta IX in Kassel in 1992 and in the 1994 exhibition “Cocido y crudo” at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.
