Bierhaus en d'r Salzgass
The Bierhaus en d'r Salzgass restaurant is a historic former brewery in Cologne's old town with a proven tradition of around 400 years as a Cologne house brewery at the same location until 1907.
history
Around 1500 the brewery at that time was called "Zur Teschen"; the medieval brewery was previously named "Zum Hunen", "Zum Huntgin" and "Zum Hohen Durpel".
In 1798 the French abolished the guilds in Cologne ; At that time, the house brewery, which was now called "Zur Täsch", belonged to the councilor and member of the Cologne Gaffeln , Christian Schuld (or Schult).
From 1838 to 1840 the brewery and restaurant was continued by Heinrich Schult, his presumed son.
Until 1844, the “Zur Täsch” brewery belonged to Johann Flatten; he was followed by Anton Hintzen, who took over the brewery and business until 1849.
Sophia Decker was the owner of the house brewery until 1852; the brewing register shows that she is the owner.
From 1857 to 1861, Gottfried Thelen ran the “Zur Täsch” brewery, after having previously worked in the “Lost Son” on the butter market.
The next change of ownership occurred to the brewer Peter Brauweiler, who ran the house brewery from 1861 to 1872; Heinrich Hilgers is then noted in the brewing register from 1871 to 1877.
Under the new management of Peter Werker, beer was then brewed in the “Zur Täsch” brewery until 1897. Reiner Schallenberg then took over the brewery, who also became the last brewer of this traditional brewery. His widow ended the brewing business three years after his death in 1907.
The historic brewery continued as a restaurant until the 1970s and was repeatedly renovated during this time.
Under the management of restaurateurs Markus Zehnpfennig and Werner Becker, the historic brewery was reopened in 2003 under the new name "Bierhaus en d'r Salzgass". The building structure of this medieval Cologne house, with a typical two-storey hall and mezzanine, was restored in the original style. The restaurant only serves Kölsch from the Päffgen brewery in Cologne .
The Bierhaus en d'r Salzgass in Cologne's old town is also one of the historical “stops” on the Cologne Brewery Trail .

Food
The restaurant, which is furnished in a rustic brewery style, mainly offers specialties from the regional Rhenish cuisine and various meat dishes.
