List of silver coins of the German Empire

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
5 mark piece with Wilhelm II.

From 1873 the federal states of the German Empire were allowed to issue their own silver coins with a face value of 2 and 5 marks. By the Coinage Act of July 9, 1873 was regulated how the coins had to make: on the face only the sovereign or the coat of arms of the free cities of Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck was allowed to be displayed, and the coin had a Perlkreis own. On the value side , only the imperial eagle in a certain design was allowed. In addition, other silver coins with the face values of 20 pfennig, 50 pfennig and 1 mark were issued. However, these were not provided with a portrait of a ruler, as they were not published by individual states.

In 1908 3-mark coins were minted for the first time, for which the same provisions initially applied as for the 2 and 5-mark coins.

With the Coin Act of June 1, 1909, the provisions of 1873 were relaxed; Other motifs were now allowed to be shown on commemorative coins , and the pearl circle was no longer compulsory; in addition, the value side could also have a different design.

Some of the coins were produced in very high numbers, for example the currency and commemorative coins of the Kingdom of Prussia . For smaller territories with a correspondingly small population, on the other hand, there are significantly lower numbers of mints, especially for commemorative coins. Due to the war , on the other hand, the 3-mark commemorative coin from Saxony for the 400th anniversary of the Reformation in 1917 was only minted in 100 pieces, and issues for government anniversaries in Hesse (1917) and Bavaria (1918) were only minted in a few individual pieces.

The coins were valid throughout the empire, so that Baden coins could also be used in Prussia, for example.

Mints

The silver coins of the empire were produced in nine different mints :

Mint mark place Period
A. Berlin from 1872
B. Hanover 1872-1878
C. Frankfurt 1872-1879
D. Munich from 1872
E. Dresden 1872-1887
Muldenhütten from 1887
F. Stuttgart from 1872
G Karlsruhe from 1872
H Darmstadt 1872-1882
J Hamburg from 1875

Nominal value up to 1 mark

The small silver coins of the German Empire were issued from 1873 with the denominations of 20 Pfennig and 1 Mark . The mints began to mint 50-pfennig coins from 1875. As early as 1877, the 20-pfennig coins made of silver were replaced by those made of cupronickel. From 1891, as with the coins with a higher face value, the imperial eagle with a small coat of arms was used, whereas previously an eagle with a large coat of arms was in use. After 1903, coins with a face value of 50 pfennigs were no longer minted, as these coins were now replaced by the face value of ½ marks .

Production took place in all mints, although some did not produce all of the coin values in some years.

The coins, like the 2, 3 and 5 mark coins, are made of 900/1000 silver .

Nominal value from 2 marks

mass and weight

All coins are made of 900/1000 silver .

The 2-mark coins weigh 11.111 grams and are 28 mm in diameter.

The 3-mark coins weigh 16.667 grams and have a diameter of 33 mm.

The 5-mark coins weigh 27.778 grams and have a diameter of 38 mm.

In general, the face value of one mark stands for a fineness of five grams of silver. A five-mark silver coin therefore contains 25 g of silver; In comparison, there were also five-mark gold coins with a fineness of 1.79 g gold.

Value pages

The imperial eagle is depicted on the value side of the silver coins . There are two variants, the eagle with a large coat of arms ("small eagle") and the eagle with a small coat of arms ("large eagle"). The former was used until 1889, the latter from 1891. No silver coins were minted in between.

The inscription reads:

GERMAN EMPIRE - year number -
- value indication--

Exceptions

The coinage law of 1909 allowed the value side to be changed as well.

  • On the value side of the coins “Centenary of the Grand Duchy 1915” (Mecklenburg-Schwerin) and “Centenary of the membership of the County of Mansfeld” (Prussia) another form of the imperial eagle can be seen, the so-called “war eagle”.
  • The Prussian 3-mark coins "Centenary of the University of Berlin" and "Centenary of the University of Breslau" also bear other forms of the imperial eagle.
  • A modification of the imperial eagle (Art Nouveau eagle) is also struck on the value side of the coin "Centenary of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach".
  • The value side of the coin “Centenary of the Wars of Liberation against France ” bears an eagle grabbing a snake (as a symbol of Napoleon's foreign rule).

edge

The edge of the 2-mark pieces has 140 notches, while the edge of the 3-mark and 5-mark coins reads GOD MIT UNS . Between the words there are two arabesques with an iron cross between them.

list

Legend :

Face value : The face value of a coin is the value that is stated on the coin and for which the coins were mostly issued.

Issue year : The issue year is the year in which a particular coin was minted and issued.

Course / commemorative coin : A course coin is a coin without a specific reason for issuance. It only shows the portrait of the prince or the city arms. In addition, it is usually issued in several years. A commemorative coin is a coin that is issued for a specific occasion, such as the anniversary of the reign or the ruler's birthday. These coins were only produced one year at a time. However, like the circulation coins, they were official means of payment.

Occasion / motif : Here the occasion of a commemorative coin or the motif of a currency coin is given.

Mint : The coins were mostly only produced by one mint (see above), which is listed here.

embossed edition :

  • stgl : These coins were minted in the normal way. However, most of the coins no longer have the "uncirculated gloss" condition, as they have worn out over time.
  • PP : These coins are minted in a special way, separately from the others. They arestampedfrom polished discs with specially polished stamps. This makes the elevations of the coin appear matt, while the surface is reflective. These coins are usually more expensive than the normally minted copies, since in most cases they were minted in smaller numbers. If the word is present in the "PP" column, it means that the number of PP coins is not known.

particularities

Embossing errors / deviations

  • A minting error on some coins is the incorrect marginal writing OTT MIT UNS , e.g. E.g. some 3-mark coins from Anhalt from 1909 and some 5-mark coins from Prussia with the head of Wilhelm II.
    • In the 5-mark coin of Württemberg from 1908, some coins have the marginal writing OTT MI UNS .
  • The word BADEN is written without a slash next to the A on some 5-mark coins from Baden 1875–1891 , ie: BΛDEN .
  • With the Baden 5-Mark course coin from 1913 it happens that the D in BADEN is open at the top.
  • "Otto's Locken" on the 5 and 2 mark coins of Bavaria from 1888 to 1913
    • Open / closed forelock: By polishing the die, Otto's originally closed forelock became an open forelock.
    • Curls over the ear: Due to differences in the punch, there are either several curls or one large curl over the ear.
  • 2 and 5 Mark Sachsen-Meiningen: The 2 and 5 Mark coins of Sachsen-Meiningen have two different variants:
    • The Duke's beard is about 1.5 mm from the pearl circle.
    • The beard touches the pearl circle.

additional

  • Bremen originally wanted to mint a 3-mark piece in 1914. However, the outbreak of World War I prevented this.
  • Mecklenburg-Schwerin had planned to mint 2 and 5 mark coins in 1919 for the 500th anniversary of the University of Rostock.

In Prussia, a commemorative coin was planned to commemorate Bismarck's 100th birthday in 1915 .

The fact that the number of mints was due to the high demand, which would have exceeded a number of 100 million and thus above the circulation of the coins of the War of Liberation or the 25th anniversary of Wilhelm II's reign (around 9 million), made Bismarck more popular with the emperor it is clear why the plan was dropped.
