List of Reichsmark coins from the Weimar Republic
After years of hyperinflation (1918-1923) was in Germany an attempt to stabilize the market undertaken. Since there were no more gold stocks after the lost war, gold was excluded as a cover option .
Therefore, on October 15, 1923, the Deutsche Rentenbank was founded in Berlin . The pension letters it issued, which encumbered industrial companies and agricultural property, formed the cover for the Rentenbank coins. From November 15, 1923, a currency cut was implemented: 1 Rentenmark equals 1 billion paper marks.
The basis of the coinage made of silver in the Weimar Republic was formed by the old coinage law of the German Empire of June 1, 1909 until August 30, 1924. With the enactment of a new law on August 30, 1924, the Reichsmark was introduced as legal tender.
The new law provided for the following denominations:
gold coins of 10 and 20 Reichsmarks,
silver coins of 1, 2, 3 and 5 Reichsmarks,
small coins of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 Reichspfennig
The gold coins of the empire continued to be valid at their face value. The planned re-minting of gold coins, which should have the same size and the same gold content as the imperial coins, was omitted.
Legend
Obverse : The obverse is the face of a coin. It usually shows the motif or the value.
Reverse : The reverse is the back of a coin. The imperial eagle can be seen there. In the case of commemorative coins, you can often read the face value.
Face Value: The face value of a coin is the value at which the coin was issued.
Issue year / minting period : The issue year is the year in which the coin was issued. Most of the time it was also minted that year.
Occasion : For commemorative coins, the occasion of the issue is given.
Edge design : The large coins often have edge writing. This is given here. It is always complemented by an arabesque , an iron cross and an arabesque. Large coins that only had notches on the edge were also rare; one example is the 5-mark commemorative coin "Lessing". The small coins and thus almost all circulation coins were also notched or had a smooth edge.
Weight : With silver coins a distinction is made between fine and rough weight . The fine weight indicates the weight of the silver part of the coin, while the rough weight shows the complete weight. Therefore, only the rough weight is used here.
Material : Most coins are made of alloys. The following alloys are available for Reichsmark coins:
- Copper 950: 95% copper , 4% tin and 1% zinc
- Copper 915: 91.5% copper , 8.5% aluminum
- Nickel 1000: 100% nickel
- Silver 500: 50% silver , 50% copper
embossed edition:
- stgl : These coins were minted in the normal way. However, most of the coins no longer have the "uncirculated gloss" condition, as they have worn out over time.
- PP : These coins are minted in a special way, separately from the others. They arestampedfrom polished discs with specially polished stamps. This makes the elevations of the coin appear matt, while the surface is reflective. These coins are usually more expensive than the normally minted copies, since in most cases they were minted in smaller numbers. If the word is present in the "PP" column, it means that the number of PP coins is not known.

- ↑ The introduction of the 4 Reichspfennig coin should result in a price reduction of 20%. However, the coin was rejected by the public, so that the 4-Reichspfennig coin was canceled after one year.
- ↑ This coin was counterfeited particularly often; there are reports that up to 80% of the 50-pfennig coins were forged. This is why this coin was withdrawn from 1928 and replaced by the 50-pfennig coin made of nickel.
The circulation coins were minted in all of the mints , but they were not commissioned with the production of the coins every year.
