Bierverlag is an outdated term for beverage wholesalers , but several companies still have it in their name. In Middle High German, the verb “to lay” means “to spend money” or “to take something on one's account”; in this sense a beer publisher is to the brewer what a publisher is to the author .

Since beer used to be usually transported to the publisher in wooden barrels, the publisher also had its own bottling plant. Here one spoke of the publisher bottling or publishing bottling - in contrast to the term brewery (bottling) that can still be found on some labels today .
