Big Bill Lister

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Big Bill" Lister (born January 5, 1923 in Karnes County , Texas as Weldon E. Lister , † December 1, 2009 in San Antonio , Texas) was an American country musician . Lister was a popular musician in the early 1950s, but never made the big break.

Life

The Lister, who was very big for the time, began his career in 1938 at the radio station KNEL in Brady, Texas, and made a name for himself in the 1940s around San Antonio with concerts, radio broadcasts and barn dance shows . Lister also performed at the first San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo .

In the early 1950s, Lister moved to Nashville , Tennessee , the center of country music. In the next few years he got a contract with Capitol Records , was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and went on tour with Hank Williams , Little Jimmy Dickens , Minnie Pearl , Stringbean and many more. However, the great success did not want to come, especially since his singles for Capitol were less successful.

In the 1960s, Lister withdrew from the music business. He didn't find his way back into the scene until the 1980s when he found the only known copy of Hank Williams' demo band There's a Tear in My Beer in his basement. Lister later recorded the song for his Hank Williams tribute album.

In 2005, Lister was inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame . Lister was musically active until his death. He had his last appearance in October 2009. Big Bill Lister died on December 1, 2009 in Life Care Hospital.
