description

The hollow trunk of the picture oak

It stands at 410  m above sea level. NHN on the summit path of the Hahnenkamm ridge , between its main summit and the Hohen Mark , directly on the boundary between Hörstein and Kälberau . On September 22nd, 1977 it was designated as a natural monument by the Aschaffenburg District Office. A picture of the Mother of God is attached to the trunk , from which the name “picture oak” is derived. The tree is completely hollowed out by multiple lightning strikes. Because of this, the oak slowly dies.

As early as the 1970s, half of the crown was without leaves. In 2004 she only had a leafy branch less than three meters high. The last part of the treetop broke off after a storm in spring 2011 and only the dead main trunk with a few stumps remained. The trunk of the picture oak is not removed, but should gradually rot. The nature conservation advisory board of the district of Aschaffenburg will remove the picture oak from the list of natural monuments of the district.

The exact age of this tree can no longer be determined due to the lack of annual rings , but it is estimated to be several hundred years. It grew at a time when the trees on the rocky subsoil of the Hahnenkamm were not as dense as they are today. The once mighty crown of the picture oak was able to unfold so perfectly.
