Bill Deedes
William Francis Deedes, Baron Deedes , KBE , MC , PC (born June 1, 1913 in Saltwood Castle near Hythe , Kent , † August 17, 2007 in Kent) was a British journalist and politician .
Deedes went to school in Harrow and began his journalistic career in 1931 when he found a job with the Morning Post . In 1937, when he took over the post , he switched to the Daily Telegraph with his newspaper . He was a soldier in World War II and entered the British House of Commons for the Conservatives in 1950 . Under Harold Macmillan , he became a minister with no special responsibilities in 1962. In 1964 he left the cabinet as Minister of Information, but remained a member of parliament for ten more years.
From 1974 to 1986 Deedes was the editor of the Daily Telegraph , after which he continued to work as a journalist there. In 1986 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Deedes of Aldington in the County of Kent .
Deedes was married to Evelyn Branfort until her death in 2004 and has two sons and three daughters.
He died in Kent on August 17, 2007 after a brief illness.
