Bill Gairdner

Bill Gairdner (actually William Douglas Gairdner; born October 19, 1940 in Oakville , Ontario ) is a former Canadian decathlete and hurdler .

In 1963 he won silver in the decathlon at the Pan American Games in São Paulo .

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he was eleventh in the decathlon and eliminated over 400 m hurdles in the preliminary run.

In 1966 he was sixth in the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston over 440 yard hurdles and failed over 120 yard hurdles in the first round. In 1970 he was again sixth over the 400 m hurdles at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh .

He was Canadian champion over 120 yard hurdles three times (1962, 1963, 1966), three times over 400 m hurdles or 440 yard hurdles (1964, 1966, 1971) and twice in the decathlon (1962, 1964).

From 1973 to 1988 he was President and Owner of the Fitness Institute in Toronto and since 1979 President and Owner of Gairspar Investments Ltd. From 1994 to 2000 he headed the Gairdner Foundation .
