Bill Napier

William M. Napier or Bill Napier (born June 29, 1940 in Perth / Scotland ) is an asteroid researcher and author . Napier's research deals with the physical and chemical properties of interstellar dust and the effects of meteorite impacts on the earth. The asteroid (7096) Napier is named after him. Napier is also the author of numerous academic and popular science books.

Life

Napier studied at the University of Glasgow . From 1967 to 1992 he was an astronomer at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh . From 1994 to 1996, he returned to the University of Glasgow, doing research. In 2001 he became an Honorary Professor at the Department of Astrobiology at the University of Cardiff and works at the Armagh Observatory .

Notoriety acquired William M. Napier by - together with the astrophysicists and astronomers Victor Clube and other scientists developed - Theory of Coherent catastrophism (Engl .: coherent catastrophism ) which periodic Impacts from comets requires or comet fragments on Earth. Such impact events are said to have influenced the history of mankind and civilization.
