Billy Maxted

William George "Billy" Maxted (born January 21, 1917 in Racine (Wisconsin) , † October 11, 2001 in Fort Lauderdale ) was an American jazz pianist and arranger .

Maxted studied at the Juilliard School from 1937 to 1940 and also played with Ben Pollack , Red Nichols (1937 to 1940) and Teddy Powell . 1940-1942 he played in the big band of Will Bradley served in the US Navy and managed since 1945 own Dixieland band in New York ( The Manhattan Jazz Group ). He arranged for Benny Goodman and Claude Thornhill and in 1947/48 he led a band with Ray Eberle . In the 1950s he played a. a. with Bobby Hackett , Phil Napoleon , Billy Butterfield , Pee Wee Erwin and John Dengler in New York and had their own combos there. He recorded several records under his own name in the 1950s and 1960s. He liked to play boogie-woogie and stride-piano, and in Greenwich Village he often went to Nick's, where he was the house pianist.

In 1959 Reg Owen had a top 10 hit with the composition Manhattan Spiritual by Maxted.

In 1961 he moved to Fort Lauderdale.

In addition to recording under his own name, he has recorded with Red Nichols, Pee Wee Erwin and Bob Crosby .
