The Bimberi Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in the Brindabella Range about 30 km southwest of Canberra in Australia . The reserve is in the Australian Capital Territory , but is managed by NSW National Parks & Wildlife Services from New South Wales .

The Bimberi Nature Reserve borders the Namadgi , Brindabella and Kosciuszko National Parks .

In this 10,886  hectare reserve is Bimberi Peak (1,912 m), the highest mountain in the Australian Capital Territory and also Mount Ginini (1,759 m), Little Ginini Mountain (1,552 m), Snow Gum Hill (1,490 m) and Mount Aggie (1,471 m).

history

The Aborigines of the Ngunnawal and Walgalu lived in this area for about 5,000 years. Stone accumulations, tool finds and rock drawings prove this.

The Pryor's Hut was built in the 1950s as a shelter for workers at the Australian National Botanic Gardens who worked in an arboretum . This cabin has been entered on the Australian Capital Territory Monument Register.

The Franklin Chalet was built by the Canberra Alpine Club in 1938 and destroyed by the great bush fire in 2003 . It was rebuilt by students from the University of South Australia and opened in 2008.

Flora and fauna

In the Bimberi reserve, mountain trees like the snow eucalyptus grow and subalpine vegetation also thrives there . The Eucalyptus radiata grows along the Goodgradigbee River . Herb fields, grasslands and swamps characterize higher areas and conifers grow over 1,500 meters above sea level.

In the reserve the endangered rodent species lives Smoky Mouse ( Pseudomys fumeu ), the Northern Corroboree Frog ( Pseudophyrne Pengilley ), which in the Brindabella Range endemic butterfly Oreixenica kershawiphryne and Bogong moth . At Mount Ginini and Mount Gingera there are significant ecological areas and refuges for the Bogong butterflies.

Tourist information

The reserve can be reached via Mount Franklin Road . There is a parking lot at Mount Aggie and there are toilets and a parking lot at Mount Franklin . Hiking trails can be walked from these places.

On November 7, 2008, the Bimberi Nature Reserve was added to the Australian National Heritage List and it is one of the eleven nature reserves in the Australian Alps .
