description

Vegetative characteristics

Eucalyptus pauciflora grows as an evergreen tree or shrub . In sub-alpine areas it often only reaches heights of growth of 8 to 10 meters and in the lowland areas it reaches heights of growth of 20 to 30 meters. He can endure frost down to -20 ° C. The smooth and white to light gray shiny, but sometimes also red-brown bark separates from the trunk in strips. The leaves often appear whitish-green.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period of Eucalyptus pauciflora extends from December to February in Australia.

Occurrence

Eucalyptus pauciflora is found in southeastern Australia . Subalpine areas are populated, for example the Snowy Mountains . The lowland areas of its distribution area are in New South Wales , Victoria and Tasmania . The distribution area extends from southeast Queensland to Tasmania.

The snow eucalyptus occurs in closed forests , as well as in more open terrain and in small groups and grows at altitudes of 1300 to 1800 meters, where they dominate the absolute growth limit for trees.

Due to the land consolidation, large populations of Eucalyptus pauciflora in the lowlands of Victoria and Queensland were decimated and attempts are now being made to preserve the remaining populations.

Systematics

The first description of Eucalyptus pauciflora carried out in 1827 by Franz Sieber in Anton Sprengel : vegetabilium Systema , ed 16th edition, 4 (2 Cur Post..), Page 195th.

Of Eucalyptus pauciflora there are some subspecies (2008):

  • Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. acerina Rule : It occurs in Victoria.
  • Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. debeuzevillei (Maiden) LASJohnson & Blaxell (Syn .: Eucalyptus debeuzevillei Maiden ): It occurs from southern New South Wales to northeastern Victoria.
  • Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. hedraia Rule : It occurs in Victoria.
  • Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. niphophila (Maiden & Blakely) LASJohnson & Blaxell (Syn .: Eucalyptus niphophila Maiden & Blakely ) is one of the most robust eucalyptus forms that can withstand temperatures well below freezing point. It occurs from southern New South Wales to Victoria.
  • Eucalyptus pauciflora sieve. ex A.Spreng. subsp. pauciflora : It occurs from southeast Queensland to Tasmania.
  • Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. parvifructa Rule : It occurs in Victoria.
