The Bimota Vdue was a sports motorcycle from the Italian manufacturer Bimota , which was originally developed for racing in the motorcycle world championship . The Bimota VdÜ had the displacement and most powerful when it was launched two-stroke engine , which was approved for use on public roads.

History and technology

When developing the engine for entry into the 500 cm³ class, two single cylinders (bore / stroke: 72 × 61.25 mm), each with their own crankshaft, were coupled via gears. The designers promised themselves a weight advantage over the competition and the like with the two-cylinder. a. from Honda with V-4 engine; In addition, a mass balance was achieved via the counter-rotation. A wheel hub steering should be used as a special feature . The racing project was discontinued during the development phase for cost reasons, and the racing engine was then further developed into a series engine. The electronic direct gasoline injection was supposed to reduce consumption and pollutants against the background of the future Euro 1 emissions standard without a catalytic converter for the series engine. Two injection nozzles per cylinder injected the fuel directly into the cylinder at the level of the transfer ducts. In practice, gasoline direct injection caused fundamental problems with engine tuning, which meant that Bimota had to recall all Vdue that had already been delivered.

The chassis, consisting of an aluminum bridge frame , stable 46 mm telescopic fork and aluminum rear swing arm with central spring strut, Michelin tires of size 120/70 ZR 17 (front) and 180/55 ZR 17 (rear) was beyond any doubt . In 1998, after 150 copies had been built, production of the 33,000 D-Mark motorcycle was discontinued, also due to economic difficulties.

From 1999 to 2000 a small series of 26 cars was launched for racing under the name Bimota Vdue Corsa Trofeo , which achieved 122 hp at 9,500 rpm with a Dell'Orto carburetor. The Bimota Vdue Evoluzione Corsa, a further development of the racing version, appeared in 2001 with 135 hp at 10,500 rpm. About 14 copies are said to have been built.

In 2003 a street version was produced again for the first time, but with a carburettor, under the name Vdue Evoluzione and an output of 110 hp at 9,000 rpm; 120 copies were mainly made for the Italian market. In 2005 a pure racing version (Vdue Edizione Finale) was produced in a small edition (30 pieces). A total of 340 Bimota Vdue (racing and street versions) were made.
