Bintuni is a city in the Indonesian province of Papua Barat , in the western part of the island of New Guinea . During the Dutch colonial era it was called Steenkool .

Bintuni is located near the northern shore of Bintuni Bay , in the southeast of the Vogelkop Peninsula . Administratively, the city is divided into the two Kelurahan West Bintuni and East Bintuni , which together with 18 villages (Desa) form the Bintuni district . The city of Bintuni, with its 13,795 inhabitants (2010) is the capital of the higher administrative district (Kabupaten) Teluk Bintuni .

The small Bintuni Airport (IATA code: NTI) is located in Bintuni .
