BEST - Bioenenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH is a K1 competence center of the COMET program and deals with industry-driven, applied research and development of bioenergy, sustainable bio-based economy and sustainable energy systems. The center is located in Graz , on the Inffeldgasse campus .

history

The competence center Austrian Bioenergy Center, founded in 2003 with a branch in Wieselburg, was one of the 18 Austria-wide Kplus centers of the Research Promotion Agency . In autumn 2006, the scientific proponents of the K-net network RENET Austria and the Kplus center Austrian Bioenergy Center had a joint project Submission under the redesigned COMET program agreed. The notarial act required for the change of name took place on October 24, 2008, and the entry in the commercial register as BIOENERGY 2020+ GmbH was finally made at the end of January 2009. In 2013, the submission was made as part of the third call for tenders of the COMET program line K1 Centers of the FFG. The approval was announced on July 10, 2014. In 2019 the company name was changed to BEST - Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH. In the same year BEST was awarded a COMET module to set up the Chemical Looping research area.

Ownership structure:

The company is headquartered in Graz , further locations are in Vienna and Wieselburg (in the technology and research center / Technopol Wieselburg-Land of Ecoplus ,) research facilities are operated in Vienna-Simmering and Tulln (at Technopol Tulln ).

BEST works on the scientific and technological basis for processes that produce heat, electricity, gaseous and liquid energy carriers and raw materials for the chemical industry from biomass and waste. On the other hand, BEST is researching the joint use of bioenergy and other renewable energy supply technologies for efficient, environmentally and climate-friendly and economical solutions for the energy system of the future.

Five different areas represent the different thematic focuses:

  • Fluidized bed conversion systems
  • Bion conversion & biogas systems modeling and simulation
  • Energy and bioeconomy systems
    • Sub-Area: Sustainable supply and value chains
    • Sub-area: Intelligent electricity and microgrids
    • Sub-area: control and automation technology

BEST also has extensive technical center and laboratory space at all locations.
