Bird Island |
Bird Island is an island on the Gambia River in the West African state of Gambia .
geography
The uninhabited island, about 1,780 meters long and 530 meters wide, is located around 240 kilometers upstream from Banjul . The Gambia narrows here to a width of about 375 meters and here has a depth of four meters. Behind the island is a canal about 80 meters narrow.
About six kilometers to the east, upstream the Gambia, lies the next larger town, Kuntaur , on the right bank of the river .
True to its name, many birds live on Bird Island . In addition to a colony of various water birds, it provides breeding grounds for cormorants , the endangered African Darter ( Anhinga rufa ) and for Egrets ( Casmerodius albus ). The island serves as a roost for many other 15,000 to 20,000 birds.
