Strikers 1945 is the name of a series of vertically scrolling shoot'em ups from the Japanese company Psikyo . The first part appeared in 1995 as an arcade version in JAMMA format and was ported to the PlayStation a year later . By 1999 two more parts and a new edition of the first part appeared.

The series is primarily characterized by its scenario. In contrast to the usual shooters, the game uses a mixture of weapon technology from World War II and science fiction as the background and graphics set . The series basically takes up the concept and naming of the Capcom classic 1942 and its successors.

There is a cooperative multiplayer mode for two people in all parts of the game . The game's graphics engine was previously used by Psikyo in the Sengoku-Ace shooters.

General game content

The player initially selects one of five to six available fighter planes , which are based on real types of the world war (e.g. P-38 Lightning , Supermarine Spitfire , A6M2 Zero ). Every aircraft differs in terms of armament, agility and Smartbomb equipment.

Then the player is sent to a sequence of different levels . The levels are grouped into blocks of four, in which the order of the levels is determined by random calculation. The level of difficulty of the levels themselves is also adapted to this draw, so that later levels are in principle more and more difficult, whereas they are easier if they are given an earlier appearance.

In the levels themselves, the game is a typical 2D shoot'em-up in which the player from the top view his flying object deflected over the past scrolling background and opponents masses decimate in the air and on the ground has to his score to push up . In the end, the player must stand up to a multi-level destructible boss . Power-ups upgrade the aircraft and weapons of the player's aircraft or give it additional smart bombs that empty the screen. A single hit or a collision with an enemy aircraft destroys the player's aircraft.

particularities

Title-specific features of the Strikers series are primarily the selection of weapons and the allocation of points:

Weapon selection

In principle, every aircraft that can be selected has a standard armament. This becomes stronger and stronger through collected power-ups. But there is also a special feature: with every power-up, the player receives small, indestructible "daughter planes" (so-called options ) that fire a secondary weapon. This varies from aircraft to aircraft: The Bf 109 fires guided missiles , for example , while the A6M2 drops short-range free- fall bombs .

The option -shots can also be charged by holding the fire button. As soon as the bar displayed on the screen is full, the options make themselves independent and carry out a special attack lasting a few seconds. The disadvantage here is, however, that the player has to forego bursts of fire while charging.

The Smartbomb performs a large-scale and very effective attack on the entire screen area and is therefore only available to a limited extent.

Scoring

Basically, the player receives points for destroying opponents. In addition, however, the player can receive additional points by collecting the medals that appear after the destruction of certain buildings . For this he immediately receives a randomly generated number of points.

In addition to this option, the player also receives a bonus for every Smartbomb remaining at the end of the level.

scenario

All graphics and designs of opponents are based on a war scenario similar to the Second World War. Well-known types of aircraft and tanks can be made out. The player flies through typical war scenarios such as a naval port equipped with battleships and submarines, an air force base, an occupied city and the like.

However, the bosses are more like science fiction. The player competes against huge flying wings and armored zeppelins . The bosses are not defeated after the first fatal hit and transform themselves into Transformers -like flying robots that have to be defeated again.

Parts of the series

  • Strikers 1945 (1995)
  • Strikers 1945 II (1997)
  • Strikers 1945 Plus (1999)
  • Strikers 1945 III or Strikers 1999 (1999)

Parts I and II retained the theme of World War II. Part III, on the other hand, introduced modern types of aircraft and scenarios. Strikers 1945 Plus updated the graphics engine of the first part.

The first two parts were implemented for PSX . Part II appeared regularly in Central Europe in 2003, while the first part was limited to Japan. Part III was not ported. Strikers 1945 Plus could also run on the Neo Geo .

There is also a Flash game titled Strikers 1945 and playable on the Internet . However, this is based on 1941: Counter Attack by Capcom , a game in the 1942 series.
