Biritiba Mirim , officially Portuguese Município de Biritiba Mirim , is a Brazilian city in the state of São Paulo in the metropolitan area of São Paulo . In 2010, 28,575 people lived in Biritiba Mirim on around 317.4 km 2 . The population was estimated at 32,251 inhabitants as of July 1, 2018, who are called Biritibano (in Portuguese biritibano ).
City name
The town's name comes from the Tupi-Guarani , from Biri ( pi'ri ), the name of a frequent in the area Schilfrohrart rhynchospora and mirim "small". Biritiba Mirim thus means “place where many small Biris grow”. Sometimes the spelling Biritiba-Mirim is also used.
Others
At the end of 2005, the mayor of Biritiba Mirim, Roberto Pereira da Silva, issued a ban on death for the city's residents. This ordinance represents a kind of satirical protest in response to a national law that forbids the expansion or construction of cemeteries in the area of sensitive or significant environments. This law affects Biritiba Mirim directly, as all graves in the municipal cemetery are already occupied.
The city lies above a groundwater source for about two million people in the city of São Paulo and consists partly of protected forests. Thus, Biritiba Mirim falls under the restriction of the law. Because of this, measures were taken such as dividing crypts and burying people under the sidewalk. Biritiba Mirim is not the only city affected by the legal restrictions. Several dozen other cities in the area are facing similar problems.
