The Birkensee is an 11 hectare quarry pond northeast of the city of Hanau in Hesse.
history
The Birkensee was created in 1985 as a gravel pit in the course of the construction of the Federal Highway 66 . After the construction work was finished, the gravel pit was backfilled and turned into a quarry pond, which today is fed by the Kinzig's groundwater .
The lake is owned by a fish farm that farms fish here and in the neighboring waters. The lake is also used for fishing, diving, surfing and boating. For a long time there was also a bathing establishment on the south bank with a sandy beach about 40 meters long, but due to the shallow depth of the lake, blue-green algae bloom was a particular problem, so that the Birkensee had to be officially closed as bathing water in 2012.
