history

The authority was created on January 1, 2000 by merging the Hessian State Office for Soil Research (HLFB) and the Hessian State Institute for the Environment (HLFU). The Hesse Climate Change Center has also been established here since October 2008. Since the Nature Conservation Department was added on January 1, 2016, the authority has been called the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology , or HLNUG for short.

The HLNUG examines and monitors the essential environmental media water, soil and air as well as the nature conservation-relevant habitats and species in Hessen. It performs central tasks such as the further development of the spatial data infrastructure.

The HLNUG collects, records and evaluates nature conservation data as well as data on the condition and changes in environmental media and uses them to create concepts, recommendations for action and reports. It advises ministries and other authorities and informs professional groups and the public through publications, events and the Internet.

The Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology has its headquarters in Wiesbaden with branches in Kassel , Gießen and Darmstadt as well as in Bad Hersfeld , Ebsdorfergrund , Hünstetten and Villmar .
