Macedonian Kingdom

Bisaltia ( Greek Βισαλτία ) or Bisaltica was an ancient district in Macedonia . The kingdom of the Thracian Bisalter was originally located here . The name of the modern municipality Visaltia is derived from the ancient name.

Bisaltia was west of the Strymon and Kerkinitis Lakes. It bordered the Strymonian Gulf to the southeast, Mygdonia to the south, and Krestonia to the west . The strymon separated Bisaltia in the north from Sintike, in the northeast from Odomantis , in the east from Edonis and in the southeast from Pieris . Well-known cities in the district are Argilos , Berge , Brea , Ossa , Kerdylion , Tragilos , Arrolos, Euporia and Kalliterai. The location of the Bisaltes river mentioned is unknown.

Bisaltia is said to have originally been ruled by the mythical King Rhesus . In 655/654 Paros founded the colony Argilos. As Xerxes I. 480 BC BC passed through with his army, the king of the Bisalter fled to the Rhodope Mountains . However, his six sons followed Xerxes I into the war, for which the king had his sons' eyes gouged out. After the Persian Wars , the Macedonian King Alexander I conquered Bisaltia.
