The Abbey of Our Lady Chau Son Don Duong (lat. Abbatia BMV de Chau Son ) is a Cistercian - Abbey in Don Duong Province Lam Dong Province in Vietnam , in the diocese of Da Lat .

Foundation and orientation

The monastery was founded in 1936 in Nho Quan ( Ninh Bình Province ) by the mother abbey of Phuoc Son . The convention received a contemplative orientation, i. H. the monastic community leads a life according to the Benedictine rule , the Cistercian tradition and the spiritual path of its founder Henri Benoît Thuan Denis (Benoit Thuận, Benedikt Thuan, 1880–1933). Their motto is Ora et labora .

Headquarters in Nho Quan (1936–1953)

On September 8, 1936, the first prior Anselm Le Huu Tu celebrated a festive high mass with the still young community and thus officially founded the new Chau Son monastery. On September 15, 1950, the Cistercian assembly in Casamari monastery (Italy) established the Chau community Son to the independent monastery.

Temporary seat in Phuoc Ly (1953–1957)

Because of the partition of Vietnam and the war that followed , the monks had to move from the north to the south with their triennials, novices and postulants on April 21, 1953 . The community first found temporary accommodation in Phuoc Ly, Thanh Tuy Ha (now Nhon Trach County, Đồng Nai Province ). On August 8, 1953, Father Berchmans Nguyen Van Thao was appointed Superior of Chau Son Community.

On June 1, 1957, the Chau Son community moved from Phuoc Ly to Don Duong in the Tuyen Duc Province of the Archdiocese of Saigon - today Lac Xuan Association, Don Duong District, Lâm Đồng Province , Đà Lạt Diocese .

On July 27, 1961, the Monastery of Our Lady of Chau Son Don Duong was declared an independent priory by decree of the Holy See . On November 13, 1963, the Pope elevated the monastery to an abbey . On March 2, 1964, Prior Stefan Tran Ngoc Hoang was elected first abbot of Chau Son Abbey. In 1971 the abbey was given a branch in Chau Thuy in the Binh Tuy province in the Phan Thiet diocese.

On July 5, 1976, Abbot Leo Vu Duc Chinh was imprisoned with two priests and two monks. Abbot Stefan Tran Ngoc Hoang replaced the leadership of the monastery. On January 6, 1994, Father Gerardo Nguyen Van That was elected third abbot of Chau Son Abbey.

On June 15, 2000, Father Francis Phan Bao Luyen was elected fourth abbot. On August 15, 2001, the assembly of monks with their abbot Francis Phan Bao Luyen decided to found the Chau Son Sacramento community in California .
On August 4, 2003, the Chau Son Community opened the Chau Son Cistercian Institute to train its members in philosophy and theology.

On March 25, 2007, Father Ephrem Trinh Van Duc was elected fifth abbot of Chau Son Abbey. In 2010, the community with the then abbot Ephräm Trinh Van Duc purchased 40 hectares of land in Ngoc Lam in the diocese of Xuân Lộc with the aim of building a new convent there.

On April 10, 2013, the rector of the M. Vianney Nguyen Tri Phuong Institute was elected abbot. He is the sixth abbot of this abbey. On May 19, 2013, the assembly of monks with their abbot M. Vianney Nguyen Tri Phuong decided to found the Chau Son Nothgottes community in Germany by signing a contract.

Today the community has 167 members: 136 monks, six with temporary profession, seven novices, 18 postulants. Of the monks, 43 are fathers and 13 are deacons. Unlike in the western world, there are many young people in the Vietnamese monasteries who want to consecrate themselves to God. The current abbot is Domenico Savio Trần Thiết Hùng OCist (elected on April 25, 2019).
