The Episcopal Palace in the Grisons canton capital Chur is located opposite the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in the courtyard . The listed building is the official residence of the Chur diocesan bishop , the episcopal office and the episcopal chancellery.

As part of the court, the Episcopal Palace is included in the list of cultural assets of national importance in the canton of Graubünden .

location

The former canons' houses directly adjoin the Episcopal Palace towards the old town . The Mars oil , which once housed the stables this same canons, before he became the beginning of the 20th century bishop's hotel operations with ballroom, located on the other side of Hofstrasse .

history

The first building was built after 1272 following the inauguration of the cathedral. The current appearance goes back to the baroque redesign in 1732/33 under the Tyrolean bishop Joseph von Rost (in the office of Chur bishop as Benedikt von Rost from 1728 to 1754), who incorporated architectural ideas from his homeland into the building.

Between 1559 and 1610 the cookbook " A beautiful cookbook 1559 " was written in the episcopal castle . It is considered the oldest cookbook in Switzerland. In 2020, the Cathedral Treasury Museum will open in the Bishop's Palace with the Cathedral Treasure and the images of death dated 1543.

decoration

The castle is decorated with rich stucco decorations and four pilasters on the facade and is built around an inner courtyard. Two mighty bronze lion masks act as ring holders on each of the two portals.
