Rüdesheim Episcopal Winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bischöfliche Weingut Rüdesheim is a church owned winery in Rüdesheim am Rhein . It is located in the German wine-growing region Rheingau . It cultivates around nine hectares of vineyards, 80% of which are planted with Riesling and 20% with Pinot Noir.

History of the winery

The Bischöfliche Weingut Rüdesheim with its predecessors is probably one of the oldest wineries in the Rheingau and Germany, even if the exact year of foundation is not clearly known. The origin of today's Bischöfliche Weingut Rüdesheim is the former parish vineyard Rüdesheim, the first evidence of which can be found in the 11th century. In the 12th century, the presumably existing parish winery was expanded by a donation from the noble Engelhard Brömser from Rüdesheim. For the safe return from Saracen captivity, he vowed to found a church in Rüdesheim and to give it vineyards.

In 1984, the Limburg diocese took over the Rüdesheim parish winery as a foundation. Since then it has carried the coat of arms of the Limburg diocese. In 1996 the name was changed to "Bischöfliches Weingut Rüdesheim". It has been operating as a limited liability company since 2009.

Today the seat of the Bischöfliche Weingut Rüdesheim is the former monastery of Saint Hildegard von Bingen in Rüdesheim- Eibingen . In 1165 Hildegard von Bingen took over a partially dilapidated and vacant Augustinian monastery in Eibingen, which was originally founded by the aristocratic Marka von Rüdesheim in 1148. Towards the end of the 17th century, the old monastery was replaced by a new building, of which only the old east wing with the Eibingen parish church, which was rebuilt after a fire, is the burial church of St. Hildegard von Bingen. In this wing there is the Bischöfliche Weingut Rüdesheim, as well as an old vaulted cellar (17th century), which the winery now uses for vinification.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The vineyards of the winery, planted with Riesling, extend in the Rheingau from Johannisberg via Geisenheim to Rüdesheim. These include individual layers such as the Johannisberger Hölle or the layers from the Rüdesheimer Berg , Berg Schlossberg, Berg Roseneck and Berg Rottland. The Pinot Noir are mainly grown in Rüdesheim and Assmannshausen .

Most of the harvest is done by hand. Depending on the quality, the Rieslings are matured in steel tanks and large Rheingau barrels (large wooden barrels). The Pinot Noir mature in barrels and some of the great wines also mature in barriques .

The Bischöfliche Weingut Rüdesheim feels responsible for preserving creation. It therefore values sustainable cultivation methods and has been EMAS certified since 2010 (register no. DE-179-00015).
